- Earl Grey is not a variety of tea. It is the first seasoned tea, which is blended from black tea. It is the most famous seasoned tea in the world.
- Birth of tea bags: Thomas Sullivan, a New York importer, packed samples of tea in silk bags to send to clients. The clients steeped the bags whole, silk and all. The next time they ordered tea from Sullivan, they complained that the tea was packed differently. So Sullivan retained the idea of the bags but used gauze instead, for it was a less expensive alternative to silk. Voila – tea bags were born!
- “Orange Pekoe” some people think is a type of tea, but is really a grade of tea.
- Green Tea is full of powerful antioxidants that work wonders for your overall well-being. It is believed to kill cancer cells, lower bad cholesterol, boost overall metabolism… It is the latest ‘in’ drink and tastes good too.
- The botanical name for Tea is Camellia Sinensis. It means “the Chinese Camellia” in Latin, and is related to the garden camellias.
- It is said that Anne, Duchess of Bedford, established the afternoon tea tradition. She requested that light sandwiches be brought to her in the late afternoon because she had a “sinking feeling” during that time because of the long gap between meals. She began to invite others to join her and thus it became a tradition.
